Candle Light Mode Olympus 550UZ
February 24, 2008 by engtovo
I didn’t have a classic taper candle that you would likely use for a portrait so I started taking photos of objects by candle light to see what kind of detail I could get starting with a couple of the candle itself. This is in the candle light scene mode. These are all hand held shots, no tripod use.
This one was a bit of a tricky one because the sand dollar is on a drum head that is almost the same color and the candle which is relatively tall is set on the drum head to so the light is quite high above the sand dollar.
I set this little crystal in the candle to see if I could see the rutilation inside and you can see them and an interesting little reflection on the glass as well.![]()
With this Saint Anthony medal you can read all the words, I thought that was pretty cool.
Some other crystals all that have things inside them
I really liked this little button one for some reason ![]()
This is a little transparent butterfly that I think was a cake decoration This one caught a little reflection off of a black metal table the candle was sitting on on the left.

This one I held this little wooden box next the candle and it illuminated the words and design.
Oh almost forgot this one I held a cd next to the candle to get the flame refection and see if the rainbows on the disc would show up. It turned out kinda neat.

your candle light scene mode study is interesting - i hope you experiment with this mode more and post your results - thanks for sharing
(i hope you didn’t find that sand dollar in the back yard)
