Keeping An Eye On U.S. Earthquake Activity In The Lower 48

If we looked at this same map on any given week over the last few years there are more small quakes in Washington and Montana then average but not a huge amount.  Kilauea is showing lots of activity on the big island of  Hawaii that is to be expected, but look at Puerto Rico, we don’t normally see quite that much activity there on the average week.

USA Recent Earthquake Map

California / Alaska

The imperial Valley in CA has been swarming massively non stop for months on end since the larger quake across the border in Mexico.  This really is a hot spot of activity and a high danger area.  This is a earth expansion rip zone and if it were to rip now it could connect the Salton Sea which is below sea level to the Gulf of California.  Other parts of California and Alaska are always at high risk for sizeable quakes and the activity is constantly high so I really don’t pay too much attention to them in general.

Yellowstone

There was a small group of 13 quakes in Spencer Idaho not far from Yellowstone followed with 4.1 and one small quake after so far other than that Yellowstone activity is showing nothing special.

Western Washington

I know these quakes are really small and insignificant, It is the pattern that I am keeping an eye on.  It is rare from watching the last few years to see three of them so close together near the Seattle fault and near the epicenter of what I have seen coming eventually.  I am just curious If we will see that increase at all.

This map does show some of the more East West faults nicely.  They won’t give a more detailed closer map for some reason.  There was a 3.4 in the Mt. Rainier area (towards Packwood) and several small quakes down near Mt. St. Helens as well.

Arkansas

We Are swarming again in the Greenbrier – Guy, Arkansas area.  I believe this is swarm number three since January.  There are 29 quakes so far over the last two days.  The biggest of this writing are 3.9.  The primary quakes of the other two swarms seemed to last 4-5 days.
